Master Chief Leonidas F. Hamel USN (Ret.) Class 8
Leonidas F. Hamel, 85, passed away peacefully in his home on September 11, 2010. A fitting day for a "Hero" as he was considered by those who were privileged to know him. He was a role model for the young and old alike. A quote from a Navy Physician expresses what our hearts felt. "It was an honor to care for Mr. Hamel. He is a remarkable man, the likes of which are not present in my generation. I have the utmost respect for him." Leo (aka Pepe) was a steadfast, holy man who loved God and inspired us all.
Born in Canada, October 7, 1924, he was raised in Connecticut and came to California via the U.S. Navy in 1946. He served in the Navy for 23 years retiring as aMaster Chief and as a Frogman in UDT-11( before the Navy Seals). His Naval career spanned three wars and ended retrieving several Mercury Project Astronauts. After retiring from the Navy he became a heating, AC and refrigeration independent contractor.
Married in 1955, he is survived by his wife, Marie, of 54 years. Together they created a beautiful family consisting of eight children, 20 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his three sisters. His entire family was gathered in the preceding weeks to celebrate his life and returning to his eternal home. We love and will miss him dearly.
A funeral was held on September 17th, 2010 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Lakeside, CA.
