Article from:The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA) Article date:February 23, 2001

VIRGINIA BEACH -- A Navy SEAL team member died in rough surf at Virginia Beach early Thursday during a training exercise in which the small boat he was operating capsized.

Petty Officer 2nd class Scott M. Danielson, 26,had been the coxswain in a small outboard power boat the Navy calls a rigid-hull inflatable.

He apparently had just dropped off fellow SEALs in a training exercise off the beach at Fleet Combat Training Center Atlantic, Dam Neck.

The accident occurred just after midnight, amid strong winds that had accompanied an approaching cold front.

The other SEALs had waded ashore, completed their exercise and were in the process of returning to the boat when they discovered it had capsized, said Lt. Cmdr. Ron Hill, a spokesman for Naval Special Warfare Group Two, headquartered at the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base.

Danielson was found within minutes by other SEALs who immediately administered emergency aid, Hill said. Danielson was taken by ambulance to Virginia Beach General Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:40 a.m.

Danielson, a hull technician and native of Royal Oak, Mich., was assigned to SEAL Team Eight at Little Creek. He and his wife lived in Virginia Beach.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, Hill said.

A memorial service is to be scheduled for next week at the Navy Chapel on Little Creek.
