“There is no ‘I’ in TEAM” – US Navy SEALs

An elite Special Forces unit of the United States Navy, the US Navy SEAL wear their uniforms with pride. The US Navy SEAL uniform can be classified into 5 categories:

• Service Dress
• Full Dress
• Dinner Dress
• Service Uniform
• Battle Dress

Service Dress

The service dress is a Naval Uniform worn by the US Navy and SEAL for all official functions but is not considered as a dinner dress. This uniform is normally worn while traveling on official work, and during reporting to high command. There are two variants for summer (white) and winter (blue) although the blue uniform can be worn through the year.


The color of the US Navy SEAL uniform is the same for both officers and Petty officers. The only changes are in the hat, insignia, stripes, and rank. Here are the different types of hats for different ranks:





Full Dress

Full Dress uniforms of the US Navy SEAL are normally worn during different types of ceremonies including retirement, change of command, commissioning and de-commissioning, wedding, funeral, and for any occasion otherwise appropriate. The full dress uniform is quite similar to the service dress uniform with ribbons being replaced by full-size medals right above the left breast pocket. The ribbons are worn, but on the opposite side of the decorations.

Dinner Dress

The Dinner dress uniforms of the US Navy SEALs are also similar to the service dress uniforms except for the fact that they are worn without ribbons and with miniature medals as well as badges. The dinner dress blue of Navy SEALs is worn with a white dress shirt and black bow tie. The Dinner Dress is worn with a Blue or White short jacket that has three buttons on each side and is always worn open. The other accessories include a black bow tie and cummerbund.


Service Uniform

The US Navy SEAL service uniform is the daily wear dress and is also known as the khaki uniform. The uniform consists of a khaki short-sleeve button-up shirt and khaki trousers that is worn with a gold belt buckle. The Ribbons are worn right above the left pocket of the khaki shirt. The US Navy SEAL warfare insignia is above the ribbons, the nametag is above the right pocket, while the rank insignia is on the collar. The shoes worn with the khaki dress are black or brown oxfords while the socks are black or brown in color.

Battle Dress Uniforms (BDU)

Battle dress uniforms are used by the US Navy SEALs for combat warfare. These uniforms are normally in camouflage designs and colors depending on the warfare region. The most common BDU for US Navy SEALs is the Woodland Camo shirt and trousers. The nametag is above the right breast pocket, the SEAL insignia patch on the right hand and the US flag patch on the left hand. Some of the other US Navy SEAL BDU’s include the Desert Camo, Olive drab, Black, and the Tiger stripes Camo.
